Robot Hand Startup Proception Settles Tesla Suit and Raises 11 Million Dollars
Proception, a robotics startup founded by a former Tesla Optimus engineer, settled a year long trade secret lawsuit with Tesla and announced an 11 million United States dollar seed round on the same day. The company is shipping its first high dexterity robotic hands to researchers and robotics companies, betting that most humanoid makers will buy hands rather than build them.

What Happened
Proception, a robotics startup focused on dexterous robotic hands, announced on Monday, June 29, 2026 that it has raised an 11 million United States dollar seed round led by First Round Capital, with participation from Y Combinator and the early stage fund BoxGroup. On the same day, the company confirmed it had settled a year long trade secret lawsuit brought by Tesla, which dismissed the case earlier in June. Founder Jay Li, who served as a technical lead on Tesla's Optimus humanoid robot program, is now shipping the first batch of Proception's high dexterity robotic hand to researchers and robotics companies while opening up to wider orders.
The Capability
The hard problem Proception is targeting is dexterous manipulation, which is the ability to grasp, rotate, and handle objects with humanlike precision. The company's robotic hand has 22 degrees of freedom and multiple joints per finger, and it is wrapped in a sensor packed glove that doubles as the hand's skin. That same glove is the core of Proception's data strategy. Human testers wear the glove along with a headset to capture detailed hand interaction data without requiring a robot in the loop, which sidesteps the main limits of the teleoperation method that most humanoid trainers rely on today. Li argues that pairing highly dexterous hardware with this scalable data collection is the combination the market is missing.
Why It Matters
Robot hands are widely considered the last mile of the humanoid story. Even Tesla chief executive officer Elon Musk has called robot hands one of the biggest engineering problems still unsolved, and academic researchers have estimated it could take a decade before robotic hands become functional enough to do what human hands do. Proception is betting that most humanoid robot companies will buy hands rather than build them in house, mirroring how the automotive industry sources specialized components from dedicated suppliers. First Round partner Bill Trenchard, who led the investment, said the company may have the most sophisticated hand on the market today, along with the underlying data and models to support it.
The Bigger Signal
The dexterous hand segment is now one of the most contested corners of the robotics supply chain. In China, Linkerbot holds a reported 80 percent of the global market in high degree of freedom hands and is targeting a 6 billion United States dollar valuation after shipping more than 1,000 units a month, while other Chinese competitors have raised close to 1 billion yuan. Against that backdrop, a United States startup that sells the single component every humanoid maker agrees is hardest to get right has a clear pitch, even at the seed stage. For automation buyers and humanoid integrators, the practical message is that the hand has become a sourcing decision rather than an in house science project, and the suppliers who can ship reliable, data rich hands at volume will hold real leverage over the rest of the humanoid roadmap.
