DESCRIPTION

Dextre is the fine-work member of the station's robotic family — the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator, a two-armed robot for jobs that would otherwise cost a spacewalk. Changing batteries and swapping out external cameras are the routine ones. It is 11.4 feet long, about 3.5 m, and weighs 3,664 pounds, roughly 1,662 kg. Its dual-arm design carries its own lights, video equipment, a tool platform and four tool holders, so it arrives at a worksite with what it needs rather than being handed tools. Dextre works on the end of Canadarm2 or from the Mobile Base System, and is driven by robotics controllers on the ground — both at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston and at the Canadian Space Agency's headquarters in Saint-Hubert — rather than by the crew on board.
