DESCRIPTION

The LS3, or Legged Squad Support System, was a rough-terrain quadruped built by Boston Dynamics with DARPA and the US Marine Corps to carry equipment for dismounted troops - a mechanical mule that could follow a squad where wheeled vehicles could not go. Boston Dynamics records it as carrying 400 lbs of payload and travelling 20 miles before refuelling, with sensors for navigating obstacles. It was reported at around 800 lbs and roughly the size of a horse - about 7.5 feet long, 2.5 feet wide and 5 feet high - powered by a go-kart-style internal combustion engine driving a hydraulic system, and carrying somewhere between 50 and 70 sensors. It followed a leader autonomously over rough ground, balancing dynamically on terrain that would stop a wheeled vehicle. The programme ended and the LS3 is retired; Boston Dynamics keeps it in the legacy collection alongside BigDog, its smaller predecessor.
