DESCRIPTION
The PES-U — Passive Elastic System, UpLimb — is the unpowered half of ULS Robotics' range, and its advantages follow directly from having no battery. There is nothing to charge, so there is no limit on where or how long it can be worn, and a mechanical energy-storage drive delivers assistance smoothly rather than in motor steps, up to 10 kg at maximum. It weighs 1.9 kg, fits wearers from 40 to 100 kg, and offers eight degrees of freedom with a wide range of motion — not just up and down but side-to-side tilting and other directions, which is where rigid passive frames usually fight the wearer. A lever disengages the power assist and a pull ring re-engages it, and single-arm control means one side can be boosted independently. It goes on in under a minute, survives more than two million cycles, and is waterproof and dustproof enough for outdoor or humid work, with detachable, washable soft parts. Construction is nylon engineering plastic, aviation aluminium alloy and carbon fibre.
