DESCRIPTION
Jaco is Kinova's assistive robotic arm, and the product the company is best known for. It mounts on a motorised wheelchair and is driven from the chair's own controls - joystick, head array, sip-and-puff, or almost any other interface the user already has - so it adds capability without adding a second thing to learn. In most fittings it adds no width to the chair, which matters for getting through doorways. The arm reproduces sixteen distinct shoulder, elbow and wrist movements, giving it the range to pick up keys or a glass, open doors, press light switches and let the user eat unaided. It carries 1.6 kg continuously over a 900 mm reach, weighs 5.2 kg, and draws about 25 W from the chair. The Jaco Blue universal interface adds Bluetooth, powered USB and analog DB9 connections alongside the legacy connector. Kinova's stated aim is user autonomy - the people around them spend less time on routine assistance and more on care.
