DESCRIPTION

WAMOEBA-2R ("an Ameba in Waseda" - Waseda Artificial Mind On Emotion BAse) is an autonomous emotional-communication robot from the Intelligent Machine Laboratory of Prof. Shigeki Sugano at Waseda University. The research aims to derive a robot design method producing intelligence and emotion comparable to a human's, and so to strengthen a robot's ability to communicate. Its approach builds mechanism and control around "self-preservation", the basic criterion behind human and animal survival. An internal-secretion model borrowed from living bodies supervises and controls the robot's battery voltage, circuit temperature and electrical current against that self-preservation criterion. WAMOEBA-2R expresses the resulting condition - what the laboratory calls its emotion - by displaying a colour on its monitor and by changing the tone of its voice. It was demonstrated and evaluated by questionnaire at the 1999 International Robot Exhibition at Tokyo Big Sight, attended by some 150,000 people.

FEATURES

  • Autonomous robot for emotional communication with people.
  • Mechanism and control built on a "self-preservation" criterion.
  • Endocrine-style internal secretion model as its emotion model.
  • Monitors its own battery voltage, circuit temperature and electrical current.
  • Expresses its internal state as a colour on a monitor and as a change in voice tone.
  • Evaluated by public demonstration at the 1999 International Robot Exhibition.
  • Developed by the Intelligent Machine Lab, Prof. Shigeki Sugano.
