DESCRIPTION
WABOT-2 was Waseda University's musician robot, developed between 1980 and 1984 as the successor to WABOT-1 when the university's laboratories joined forces on a second WABOT project. Where WABOT-1 was a versatile machine, WABOT-2 was deliberately defined as a "specialist robot". Playing a keyboard instrument was chosen as its task because an artistic activity of that kind demands both human-like intelligence and human-like dexterity. The robot could converse with a person, read an ordinary printed musical score with its eye, and play tunes of average difficulty on an electronic organ. It could also accompany a person, following them as it listened to them sing. Waseda regarded it as the first milestone in developing a true "personal robot".
