DESCRIPTION
WABOT-1 was the first full-scale anthropomorphic robot developed anywhere in the world, completed at Waseda University in 1973. It came out of the WABOT project started in 1970 by the Bio-engineering group, formed from four laboratories in the university's School of Science & Engineering. The machine integrated three systems: limb control, vision, and conversation. It could communicate with a person in Japanese, and used external receptors - artificial ears, eyes and a mouth - to measure the distance and direction to objects around it. It walked on its lower limbs and could grip and transport objects using hands fitted with tactile sensors. Its builders estimated its mental faculty at that of a one-and-a-half-year-old child. WABOT-1 was assembled from two earlier Waseda subsystems: the WAM-4 as its artificial hands and the WL-5 as its artificial legs.
