DESCRIPTION
Stan is a Mobile-Robots from Stanley Robotics. It is built for Service, Transport, Airport valet parking and finished-vehicle logistics. Key figures: 3000 kg payload, released 2018.
Stan is Stanley Robotics' autonomous robot for moving cars in outdoor car parks and vehicle compounds - the world's first outdoor robotic valet parking. It drives under a car, assesses its length, width and weight, lifts it - up to 3 tonnes - moves it gently and parks it in its allocated space. Stanley compares it to Star Wars' astromech droids: Stan lends its 'brains' to an ordinary car while it moves, then goes off to move the next one. Fleet-management software models the network of paths in the compound, sets priorities and allocates efficient itineraries; each robot follows its path at up to 10 km/h while multiple sensors check for obstacles, stopping immediately if a person or object is in the way. Localisation to the centimetre combines SLAM with differential GPS, the code is modular on ROS, the system self-diagnoses, robots can be teleoperated through an HMI, and they charge themselves. Stan works 24/7 indoors and outdoors, in rain, snow and temperatures from -20 to 60 C. Commercialised in 2018 at Lyon-Saint Exupery airport and later deployed at London Gatwick and Basel-Mulhouse and in finished-vehicle logistics, Stan is provided as a service; HL Robotics, which acquired a majority stake in Stanley in 2024, says it raises parking capacity by up to 50% and cuts logistics operating costs by up to 30%.
