DESCRIPTION
REARS is a Medical-Robots from Bionic Yantra. It is built for Rehabilitation. Key figures: released 2018.
REARS (Robotic Exoskeleton Assisted Rehabilitation System) is Bionic Yantra's gait-rehabilitation robot for hospitals. It pairs a wheeled body-weight-support gantry with a powered lower-limb exoskeleton under a single controller and power supply, so a patient who cannot walk is held in a harness, stood up and taken through fall-safe walking practice with fewer physiotherapists than manual therapy needs. Four brushless DC motors drive the joints and a lithium-ion pack is rated for about 10,000 steps per charge, with 5 to 10 minutes of set-up per patient. Bionic Yantra, founded in Bengaluru in January 2017 by Vaidy Narayanan and Shiva Nagarajan, positioned REARS as India's first medical wearable robot for stroke, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, quoted a full system at about INR 2 crore and claimed CDSCO manufacturing approval. It was launched at IIIT Bangalore, shown at the Bengaluru Tech Summit, and IIIT-B's MINRO lab bought a unit for research in 2020. A personal mobility version for home use was planned but never shown. The company's last funding was in 2019 and its website has not changed since 2018, so the product appears to have stayed at pilot stage.
