HUGIN is Kongsberg's flagship autonomous underwater vehicle and, the company says, the most successful commercial AUV available: it combines IHO-quality positioning with high-resolution sensors, collecting data from many instruments at once to give a complete geophysical dataset from a single mission. Swappable batteries and removable data storage keep it working continuously. It is a multi-role vehicle for commercial, scientific and defence work, carrying synthetic aperture sonar, multibeam echo sounders, cameras, lasers, sub-bottom profilers and environmental sensors. On board it processes data during the mission for autonomous pipeline tracking, terrain navigation and target recognition, which suits it to everything from geophysical survey to mine countermeasures. It is offered in depth ratings of 3,000, 4,500 and 6,000 metres, with an aided inertial navigation system, a turning radius of 15 metres and up to 100 hours of endurance at 4 knots. HUGIN has been developed continuously since 1991 with the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI), with the first commercial survey in 1997. It launches from dedicated vessels, vessels of opportunity or from shore, and the complete system - vehicle, operator consoles and launch and recovery equipment - ships in DNV-certified offshore containers needing only an external power connection.
