COLDArm (Cold Operable Lunar Deployable Arm) is a robotic arm for very cold environments developed by Motiv Space Systems with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Motiv designs it to work down to -180 C without heaters, saving the energy a lander would otherwise spend keeping the arm warm. Its first configuration carries a 3D-printed titanium scoop to sample regolith, like earlier Mars landers, and the aim is a set of end effectors the arm can swap automatically. Motiv reports completed arm assembly, dynamometer and joint actuator testing, and JPL tested it in a thermal vacuum chamber at -180 C in November 2023.
