AMBIDEX is a dual-arm robot built around one idea: put the weight somewhere else. The motors sit in the shoulders and body, and the joints are driven by cables, so the arm itself weighs about 2.6 kg — less than a human arm — while still lifting 3 kg and moving at up to 5 m/s. That matters for safety. A light arm carries little momentum, so a collision with a person is far less dangerous than with a conventional arm of the same reach, which is why NAVER LABS presents it as a platform for working close to humans rather than behind a fence. It has seven degrees of freedom per arm and was developed with KOREATECH. The research programme around it is about learning rather than programming: NAVER LABS is teaching AMBIDEX to pick up human force control, so that it can handle the imprecise, everyday tasks that defeat position-controlled arms. It is a research platform, not a product.
