Touching the New Humanoid Robot With 'Smart Skin'

CNET’s Jesse Orrall hands-on with Gene.01, a real humanoid from Italian company Generative Bionics, at AMD’s Advancing AI conference. The robot’s “smart skin” and time-of-flight proximity sensors detect nearby people plus where and how hard it is touched, aimed at safer work in hospitals, manufacturing, and logistics. CEO Daniele Pucci describes Gene.01 as a modular European platform that AI helps design for specific jobs, with a target price of about $50,000–$70,000 and a Gene 1.1 version planned by year-end. The demo is a physical robot on the show floor, with some reactions remotely triggered for public safety.
