Can you do pressing FORCE with Yamaha SCARA robots?

Jul 20, 2026
Can you do pressing applications with SCARA robots? Let me show you an example of a 5 lb press application with a customer specification of +/- 1 lb.
➡️ The Yamaha YK400XE can exert up to 30 pounds (15 KG) of force in the Z-axis quill.
➡️ You can scale the force from 100% down to 10% of motor torque.
➡️ Each 1% increment in torque is equal to roughly 0.3 To 0.4 pounds on this SCARA model. (Yamaha YK400-XE Economy SCARA)

What about fine adjustments for most accurate measuring?
➡️ For gram-level precision or high repeatability, we recommend using an analog transducer or LVDT and NOT THE SCARA robot.
Think of it like this:
➡️ SCARAs are great for moderate force applications
➡️ Transducers are your go-to for ultra-fine control
Want the best repeatability for a YK400-XE Yamaha SCARA?
➡️ Run the robot at 20% robot speed.
➡️ Applying about 11% torque yielded the most consistent results for 5 lbs.
"So yes and no, you can do force applications with SCARAS."
"To get the most repeatable force in this application, we're running it at a slower rate."
➡️ Speed isn’t everything; consistency matters more
So, what are your thoughts?
➡️ Have you used SCARA robots for torque applications?
➡️ What challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them?
