DESCRIPTION
UMA Northstar is a Humanoid from UMA (Universal Mechanical Assistant). It is built for Assembly, General-Automation, Material-Handling.
Northstar is the general-purpose humanoid robot that Paris start-up UMA (Universal Mechanical Assistant) unveiled on 7 July 2026, alongside Version 0, a tele-operated functional prototype. UMA is led by Rémi Cadène, who worked on Tesla Autopilot and the first Optimus neural networks and founded the open-source LeRobot project at Hugging Face, with LeRobot co-builder Simon Alibert, ex-DeepMind robotics lead Pierre Sermanet and humanoid designer Robert Knight. Northstar is designed as a human-scale but much lighter-than-human robot with dexterous hands, developed by a hardware team in Geneva, and driven by learned AI models. UMA plans a wheeled industrial version first, with a dual-arm mobile robot for warehouses and assembly lines, and a biped as the long-term goal, followed by a more compact humanoid for hospitals, labs and homes. The go-to-market starts in logistics and warehouses, then manufacturing, then homes, sold as robot-as-a-service with a monthly fee rather than a purchase. UMA says it is talking with about 50 potential customers in Europe, plans pilots in 2026 and targets a first concept prototype of Northstar by the end of 2026; no price or delivery date has been announced.
