DESCRIPTION
TALON is a Ground from QinetiQ (Foster-Miller). It is built for Inspection, Monitoring, Remote. Key figures: 76.2 kg, 240 min runtime, 68 kg payload, 1950 mm reach, released 2000.
TALON is a family of tracked, remotely operated ground robots for explosive ordnance disposal (EOD), chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) work, reconnaissance, security and rescue. Designed by Foster-Miller, now part of QinetiQ, it has been in continuous service since 2000, when it was first used in Bosnia to move and dispose of live explosives; it was also the first military robot used in active combat in Afghanistan and Iraq, and is now in its fifth iteration. The current TALON 5 DOF measures 91.4 x 57.1 x 53.3 cm stowed and weighs 76.2 kg with batteries. It drives at up to 8.2 km/h, climbs 37-degree slopes and 43-degree stairs, crosses obstacles up to 38 cm high and tows 100 kg. Its heavy-lift manipulator arm carries up to 68 kg, reaches 195 cm high and 152 cm forward to the gripper tip, and the gripper rotates continuously. Operators drive it from a laptop control unit over an encrypted IP mesh radio with a line-of-sight range of more than 800 m, using 1080p pan-tilt-zoom and fixed cameras; endurance is 4-6 hours on a mission. TALON robots also searched the World Trade Center rubble pile in September 2001: Foster-Miller's Solem and TALON were among the robots CRASAR fielded on the pile during the recovery phase.
