DESCRIPTION

Rex Bionics REX is an Exoskeleton from Rex Bionics. It is built for Assistance, Medical-Assistance, Rehabilitation. Key figures: 60 min runtime.

REX is a hands-free robotic exoskeleton for rehabilitation: it lifts a user from sitting to robot-supported standing and then walks, turns and exercises with them, without crutches or a walking frame. Because it balances itself, the user's arms stay free for upper-body exercise and activities of daily living, so it suits people with more severe disabilities - including those with limited upper-body function - who cannot use crutch-dependent exoskeletons. Motion comes from 10 custom linear actuators that can move REX and a user of up to 100 kg. A custom carbon fibre pelvis gives strength and stiffness at low weight, and half a million lines of proprietary code run 27 onboard microprocessors that form a movement control system built to keep the device stable through every phase of movement. Leg length adjusts to users of different heights - Rex Bionics' screening range is about 1.42 to 1.93 m and 40 to 100 kg - and can be changed between patients in minutes. Harness and abdominal straps hold the user upright, carbon fibre cuffs with double-tethered straps hold the legs without pressure points, and wide foot plates give stability on flat ground. Power comes from interchangeable lithium-polymer batteries (29.6 V, 16.5 Ah), each good for about 60 minutes, and two are supplied for continuous use. The user drives REX with a joystick through fully automated forwards, backwards, sideways and turning movements, and REXERCISE mode delivers structured, reproducible exercise programmes set by healthcare professionals. In the RAPPER II trial users gained autonomous control in their first session. It is designed for rehabilitation centres and hospitals and is registered in the US for use under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
