DESCRIPTION

PROGRESS ONE is an Industrial-Robot from Okamura. It is built for Pick-and-place, Picking, Remote.

PROGRESS ONE is Okamura's hybrid logistics-automation system that pairs an AI-driven dual-arm picking robot with remote operation. The robot picks items on its own, and when it cannot, a human operator working away from the warehouse takes over remotely. Okamura began planning the business in 2016, announced it in January 2022 and showed the prototype at the 2022 International Robot Exhibition. It ran a trial at a real logistics site in May 2024 and was still demonstrating the system, as under development, at the International Logistics Exhibition in September 2026. The prototype combines a dual-arm robot, a remote-operation system and Okamura's own machine-learning AI. The arms switch between suction and a multi-fingered hand to suit each item, and using both arms lets it handle things one arm cannot, such as boxes with lids. The AI recognises items without any prior product registration. When autonomous picking fails, a matching function connects the robot to a waiting operator, so one operator can serve robots at many sites. The operator can point out the target with a mouse, drive the arm with a game controller, or use a data glove and gesture camera. The 2026 demonstrations added touchscreen 'remote touch' control and Real Haptics force feedback from Keio University spin-off Motion Lib, which Okamura invested in in February 2025. Motion data from both autonomous and remote picks feeds a cloud learning server, so the share of items the robot handles on its own keeps growing. Okamura sees the remote work opening logistics jobs to people who cannot work on site.

FEATURES

  • Hybrid automation: autonomous AI picking + remote operation by off-site operators
  • Dual-arm picking robot
  • switches between suction and a multi-fingered hand
  • Two arms handle items single-arm robots struggle with (e.g. lidded boxes)
  • Okamura's own AI recognises items with no prior product registration
  • Matching function connects a stuck robot to a waiting operator
  • one operator serves many sites
  • Remote modes: target designation by mouse, game controller, motion capture (data glove + camera)
  • 2026 demos: touchscreen 'remote touch' and Real Haptics force feedback (Motion Lib)
  • Autonomous and remote motion data aggregated on a cloud learning server
