Fotokite Sigma is an actively tethered drone system that gives fire, law-enforcement and defence teams an elevated view of an incident at the push of a button. It launches, flies and lands autonomously with no piloting required, and is recognised by aviation authorities as a safer alternative to free-flying public-safety drones; in the US it is exempt from Part 107 and certificates of authorisation. The system consists of a ground station and the kite, offered in a Rooftop Box for SUVs and fire apparatus that deploys hands-free from the vehicle, or in a transport case. The 1.3 kg kite, built from weather-sealed carbon fibre and composites and rated IP55, flies up to 45 m above the ground station for 24 hours or more, as long as the vehicle runs or is on shore power. A load-rated, ultra-thin tether carries power, secure video and control; the Fotokite autopilot needs no GPS. Its three-axis gimbal carries a radiometric thermal camera (320 x 240, measuring -40 to 400 C) and wide and zoom colour cameras (1080p, 0.5x to 16x hybrid zoom), streamed to the Fotokite Live app on rugged tablets and, over LTE or Wi-Fi, to up to 50 remote viewers. Redundancy includes single-motor failure tolerance, a 120-second backup flight power system, backup ground-station power, redundant flight control and tether-separation detection.
