DESCRIPTION

CSAIL UV-C Disinfection Robot is a Cleaning-Robots from MIT CSAIL. It is built for Cleaning, Sanitizing. Key figures: released 2020.

The CSAIL UV-C Disinfection Robot was built in 2020 by a team from MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in collaboration with Ava Robotics, in response to Covid-19. It pairs a custom UV-C light fixture designed at CSAIL with Ava Robotics' mobile robot base. It was deployed at the Greater Boston Food Bank, where the demands on food banks made keeping warehouse staff safe urgent. In tests the robot disinfected a 4,000-square-foot section of the warehouse in about half an hour. UV-C light is effective at killing pathogens on surfaces but is harmful to people, so the robot's value is doing the job autonomously in a space cleared of staff, covering large areas that chemical cleaning makes expensive, slow and risky for workers. MIT noted at the time that the approach could be extended to grocery stores, schools and other large indoor spaces.
