Sphero BOLT programmable robotic ball

DESCRIPTION

BOLT is a Consumer-Robot from Sphero. It is built for Education, STEM and computer-science education. Key figures: 120 min runtime, price $179.

BOLT is Sphero's earlier round programmable coding robot, the transparent waterproof sphere that preceded BOLT+ and is still sold. Two drive motors roll the 73 mm ball, and an 8 x 8 programmable LED matrix plus front and back RGB LEDs display colours, animations, scrolling text and real-time data. Its sensors include a light sensor reading 0 to 100,000 lux, four infrared emitter-receiver pairs that give 360 degree awareness up to 4 m for distance, heading and robot-to-robot messaging, and a compass that enables Auto-Aim, aligning the robot to the user through the phone's magnetometer. Students code it in the Sphero Edu app with Draw, Blocks, JavaScript or Python, or drive it in the Sphero Play app at home. A typical charge lasts about 2 hours of driving (up to 5 hours with little driving) and takes about 6 hours on its inductive charging base; because the LED matrix makes it top-heavy, its top speed and acceleration are limited for stability.
