Kalmar AutoStrad is an automated straddle carrier application that lets container terminals automate their container handling step by step. Powered by the Kalmar One automation system, it turns Kalmar straddle carriers into autonomous machines that pick up, carry and stack containers in the yard without a driver. Every Kalmar straddle carrier can be made automation-ready at the factory or retrofitted, so terminals can choose their level of automation and roll it out gradually, including in existing brownfield terminals. AutoStrad stacks containers three or four high (9'6" boxes) and comes in 40, 50 and 60 tonne lifting capacities, with a hoisting system using an electric winch and rope. Power units span diesel-electric with an engine of about 11 litres, diesel-hybrid with about 5 litres, and fully battery-electric with no engine. Each machine can pick and place containers independently of other container-handling equipment, decoupling quayside from landside operations, and it can serve end-to-end or shuttle operations and move containers between warehouses or depots and the main yard. The Kalmar Key interface integrates it with various terminal operating systems over a wireless connection, and geo-fencing creates virtual safe zones so it can work alongside other equipment and be serviced safely, while physical fencing still separates the automated yard from other traffic. Terminals using automated Kalmar straddle carriers include Patrick Terminals in Brisbane and TraPac in Los Angeles.
