DESCRIPTION

Active Robo SAM is an Industrial-Robot from Kowa Tech. It is built for Others, Remote. Key figures: 50 kg, 6 degrees of freedom, released 2015.

The Active Robo SAM is a compact, lightweight remote-control robot that Kowa Tech designed to sit in the driver's seat of an existing construction machine, such as an excavator, and drive it in place of the operator. Its arms push the machine's levers using pneumatic rubber artificial muscles, which stand up well to shock, vibration and dust, so a crew can run the machine by radio from a safe distance during the first response to a disaster, where a secondary collapse could otherwise endanger an operator. The robot weighs about 50 kg, breaks down into three parts in aluminium carrying cases, and can be mounted and working in about 30 minutes; it takes power from the machine's own battery and has a built-in air compressor and tank. Six axes driven by twelve rubber muscles move the levers, a 920 MHz handheld transmitter with joysticks controls it, and a roof-mounted receiver carries a status light and horn. Safety features include an interlock, an emergency engine stop, a transmitter tilt alarm and automatic machine stop if the radio link fails, and with vehicle cameras and a LAN link it can also be driven from a monitor room. Launched in April 2015, it is used for disaster recovery, nuclear decontamination and decommissioning, steep-slope forestry and other hazardous machine work.
