BESCHREIBUNG
TWIICE One is a powered lower-limb exoskeleton that allows people with spinal cord injury to stand up, walk and climb stairs. Its designers aim to give users back autonomy in everyday activities - sitting down and standing up, walking on even and uneven ground and on flat and inclined surfaces - and to restore some of the sensations of walking or simply standing. Users balance with crutches. Its defining traits are lightness and modularity. TWIICE argues that no single exoskeleton can meet every expectation because each disability is unique, so the device is modular and customisable to respond to different pathologies, body shapes and user experiences. It weighs 15 kg and has an autonomy of 3 hours, and its technical design pursues simplicity for robustness, reliability and low weight. Development began in February 2015 at EPFL's Robotic Systems Laboratory, and the first pilot tests followed about eighteen months later. TWIICE has proven it in competition: with pilot Silke Pan it has won a medal at four consecutive Cybathlon events, including second place in the 2020 powered exoskeleton race, and it has taken part in the Global Innovation Challenge to demonstrate real-world mobility. Users are trained and coached with the Physio 7 physiotherapy network. The company describes the current device as a prototype it is turning into a market-ready medical product.
