HUGIN Superior is Kongsberg's most capable commercially available AUV, sold as a complete system with the best data quality, coverage and navigation accuracy the company offers. Because it sits at the top of the range, its payload is fixed rather than configurable: a HISAS 1032 dual-receiver synthetic aperture sonar, an EM2040 MK2 multibeam, camera, laser profiler, sub-bottom profiler, magnetometer and sensors for methane, carbon dioxide and oxygen. In-mission MicroNavigation improves real-time positioning to better than 0.04% of distance travelled, and it adds autonomous pipeline tracking, terrain navigation and single-beacon transponder navigation. Kongsberg quotes area coverage of about 4.5 km2 per hour for seabed imagery and bathymetry, helped by 30% greater energy density for longer missions and quick turnarounds on deck. Because its positioning is so accurate it can work fully autonomously, freeing the support ship for other tasks. Everything needed to operate comes with it - launch and recovery, operator consoles, battery chargers and post-mission analysis software - in two DNV-certified deck vans. It is used for geophysical survey, hydrography, marine archaeology, environmental leak and seep detection, and defence work including rapid environmental assessment and mine countermeasures.
