FreeHand v1.2 is the robotic laparoscope holder made by FreeHand Surgical in the UK, a development of the Prosurgics FreeHand camera controller, which puts the surgeon in direct control of the scope position. The surgeon wears a hands-free controller on a headband or surgical cap, selects the direction of tilt and pan with head movements and starts the movement with an activation pedal; when the foot leaves the pedal the motion stops and the scope is held completely still. A quick tap on the pedal switches to zoom mode to move the scope in or out of the port, an indicator unit on the stack next to the monitor shows the selected direction, and three movement speeds are available. Single-use sterile motorised modules let the system be used for back-to-back procedures without separate sterilisation. FreeHand v1.2 was CE marked, FDA 510(k) cleared and registered with Japan's MHLW, and was used in urological, gynaecological and general surgery worldwide.
