The Canrig electric Robotic Pipe Handler (RPH-7000) is a nine-degree-of-freedom robot that automates tubular handling on the drill floor. Its lower manipulator arm can move between horizontal and vertical, so it takes drill pipe, drill collars, casing and tubing from horizontal to vertical, or to and from the set-back, without a separate horizontal-to-vertical machine, and protectors are not needed. It exchanges its handling tools between grippers and spinner-grippers. With the spinner-grippers it spins pipe directly into or out of the stick-up, leaving the roughneck only the make-up and break-out. For stands it uses a lower and an upper manipulator arm that work independently, allowing offline stand building of drill pipe, casing and tubing without interrupting drilling, and the lower arm can also handle BHA components and lifting subs. Torque wrenches mounted on the column or in the derrick torque drill pipe or casing up to 100 kNm. Each arm handles 3,500 kg (7,000 kg in total) and pipe of 4 to 14 inches with standard grippers, with automatic gripper changes for other sizes. The fully electric, self-contained robot has built-in controls, low-maintenance standard electric components and oil-filled gears and an energy-recovery system; it stands about 33 m tall (configurable), weighs about 65,000 kg depending on column height and draws about 180 kW peak (55 kW average) at 400-480 VAC.
