The Konecranes Noell A-STRAD is an automated straddle carrier for brownfield, greenfield and future terminals. Terminals running manual straddle fleets can adopt it in controlled phases - automating one section as a trial and then others, or converting horizontal transport and stacking one function at a time - towards full automation with minimal disruption. Existing diesel-electric Konecranes Noell straddle carriers have automation-ready controls and can be converted by retrofitting navigation antennae and positioning sensors, and A-STRADs are also delivered fully automated for greenfield terminals. It builds on the diesel-electric drive of the manual Noell carriers, which gives very precise manoeuvring, and Konecranes supplies the complete system including interchange control, fence control and software. Four versions are offered: A-N SC 634 E and 644 E with diesel-electric drives, and the 634 EHY and 644 EHY with diesel-battery hybrid drives. All lift 50 tonnes (60 tonnes in exceptional cases, depending on the spreader); the 634 models stack 1-over-2 and travel at up to 30 km/h, while the 644 models stack 1-over-3 at up to 24 km/h, with speed electronically limited for safety.
