Abundant Robotics Apple Harvester

DESCRIPTION
Abundant Robotics Apple Harvester is an Agricultural-Robots from Abundant Robotics. It is built for Agriculture, Picking, Apple harvesting. Key figures: released 2019.
The Abundant Robotics apple harvester was a self-propelled orchard robot that picked apples with suction instead of fingers. Developed by Abundant Robotics, an SRI International spin-out founded in 2016 in Hayward, California, it used computer vision to find ripe fruit and a vacuum tube on a single arm to pull each apple off the branch, then carried the fruit automatically to a bin on board. It worked one side of a row at a time and could pick at night. The company said the machine could reach 50-90% of the apples on a tree and pick one about every 2 seconds, with 1.5 seconds targeted for a commercial version. After field tests in Washington State and Australia, it ran what T&G Global called the world's first commercial robotic apple harvest in its Hawke's Bay orchards in New Zealand in March 2019, offered as 'harvest as a service'. Abundant raised about USD 12 million, including a 2017 Series A led by GV, but closed in mid-2021 after failing to raise money for a production machine; no grower ever bought one, and Wavemaker Labs acquired its intellectual property.
