Kongsberg HUGIN Endurance

HUGIN Endurance is the newest member of the HUGIN family, built for unsupervised shore-to-shore operations over long ranges. It can run for up to 15 days and 2,200 km (1,200 nautical miles), mapping about 1,100 km2 with combined HISAS synthetic aperture sonar and EM multibeam bathymetry, and is rated to 6,000 metres. It collects consistent high-resolution data without in-mission supervision, using Kongsberg's Sunstone inertial navigation system with optional MicroNavigation aiding. Because no dedicated support vessel has to follow it, survey operations produce less carbon, keep personnel onshore and can take advantage of a far wider weather window. Launch and recovery works from shore or from a ship of opportunity. The vehicle carries pressure-tolerant lithium-ion batteries, redundant sensors and in-mission processing, handles unexpected events by switching to redundant modes, and communicates securely with remote operating centres. It can be configured with hydroacoustic instruments for mapping and inspection plus underwater and surface awareness sensors that feed its autonomous decision-making. Kongsberg describes it as the most capable commercial vehicle in the large-diameter AUV segment.
