Welding Robots: Buying Guide, Prices and Models
A welding robot carries a welding torch or spot-welding gun along a programmed path, producing consistent seams and spot welds at rates and quality that manual welding cannot hold across shifts.
372 robots in our catalogue are tagged to the 2 applications in this guide.
Arc welding robots (MIG, TIG, laser) dominate fabrication shops and are now sold as complete cobot welding cells that a welder programs by hand-guiding the torch. Spot welding robots are the backbone of automotive body shops, where dozens of arms work a single line.
The application pages below separate seam welding from spot-welding lines; the categories cover the industrial arms and collaborative robots that carry the torch.
Applications
What to look for
- Process
- Match the robot to the process: MIG and TIG arc welding, laser welding, or resistance spot welding. Each needs a different torch or gun, power source and wire or cooling supply, and the robot must carry it.
- Reach, payload and positioners
- Reach must cover the part with the torch attached; spot-welding guns are heavy and need high-payload arms. Positioners and tracks extend reach and present the seam in the best welding position.
- Seam finding and tracking
- Touch sensing, laser seam finding and through-arc tracking compensate for part variation. Without them, fixturing must be tight enough to hold tolerances.
- Programming
- Cobot welding cells trade speed for easy programming by hand-guiding; industrial cells use offline programming from CAD for complex parts and high volumes.
- Safety and fume extraction
- Arc welding cells need light screens, fume extraction and guarding or, for cobots, area scanners and reduced speed when an operator is close.
