BESCHREIBUNG
Burt is Barrett's upper-limb therapy robot for patients recovering from stroke, traumatic brain injury, burns and orthopaedic and musculoskeletal conditions affecting arm mobility. The patient's arm rests in a forearm cuff on the robot's end-effector, letting it float weightlessly while Burt applies gentle forces to assist, resist or cue movement through realistic, game-like activities - sorting laundry, catching objects, fishing - shown on a display. It is built on Barrett's WAM technology: a 3-DOF end-effector manipulator with backdrivable gearless transmissions, transparent dynamics and low inertia, backdrivable in the transverse, sagittal and frontal planes so it can never force a patient's arm into an unsafe position. It sets up in about 60 seconds with a quick left/right swap, and offers around 20 activities with haptic feedback, cognitive challenges (attention, memory, visual neglect) and strength assessments that score every session so therapists can set goals and track progress; BurtAssist and BurtResist modes adapt to the patient. The BurtWrist add-on brings robotic pronation and supination and graded grip sensing, with under 90 seconds of setup. Burt is an FDA-registered, ISO-certified Class II medical device engineered and assembled at Barrett's facility in Newton, Massachusetts, sold worldwide through partners since 2019. A Research Edition adds open-source C# (BurtSharp) and Unity libraries for haptics, teleoperation, VR/AR and neurorehabilitation research, and can run bilaterally with two systems.
