MOONDINO is ARVAtec's solar-powered agricultural robot for mechanical weeding in rice paddies, built in Italy under a patent licence from Eco Process & Solutions S.A. It works fully autonomously with no operator on board, moving over both dry and flooded fields, and its precision tools uproot weeds between the rows so that no herbicide is needed; the rice must be sown in rows with RTK precision for it to work. Two photovoltaic panels power its electric motors and charge batteries that keep it working when there is no light, so it uses no fossil fuel and emits no CO2. Placed in the field after sowing, the light, compact four-wheel-drive robot travels at 1 km/h around the clock, repeatedly rotating through the paddy chambers for about 1.5-2 months, and one machine covers about 10 ha. It navigates with two RTK GNSS receivers, has safety control systems and is managed from a dedicated mobile app. ARVAtec launched it in 2022.
