The BH8-series BarrettHand is a multi-fingered programmable grasper that secures objects of different sizes, shapes and orientations. The BH8-282 is an intelligent, highly flexible eight-axis gripper that reconfigures itself in real time to conform to a wide variety of part shapes without tool-change interruptions, so one hand can stand in for an endless set of custom gripper jaws and switch part shapes electronically within half a second. It weighs just 980 g with a compact 25 mm base, carries up to 6 kg, and is totally self-contained: communications electronics, servo controllers and all four brushless motors are housed inside. Of its three multi-jointed fingers, two have an extra degree of freedom with 180 degrees of lateral mobility for many grasp types, and all joints have high-precision position encoders. It connects to any arm over serial or high-speed CANbus (USB adapters included). Full source code comes with every hand, with the BHControl GUI for Linux and Windows, the Grasper Control Language, PyHand and the libbarrett C++ library. Options include fingertip torque sensors, tactile sensor arrays, a 6-axis force/torque sensor and the Perception Palm with dual cameras, laser projector and IR rangefinder. Applications range from assembly, packaging and palletising to food handling, remote manipulation, hazardous-material handling and bomb disposal.
