UnboxSort is a vertical robotic parcel sortation system from Unbox Robotics. Instead of a fixed conveyor or cross-belt sorter, it uses a fleet of small autonomous mobile robots that carry one parcel each and place it into destinations stacked on several levels, so the sorter uses building height rather than floor area. Parcels are scanned at automated induction stations and discharged onto the robots, which drive across the floor and raise their scissor-lift tops to drop the parcel into the assigned bag, slide, rollcage, gaylord, gravity-flow lane or tote. Optional modules weigh and dimension parcels as robots pass, a smart charging system keeps batteries available, and safety barricading separates people from the robot zone. The fleet is coordinated by swarm-based fleet-management software and integrates with warehouse management systems. The robots come in the SR series: the SR-450 and SR-550 carry up to 24 kg and the SR-650 up to 32 kg, all at up to 3.2 m/s with a sorting height of up to 2.4 m. The maker claims 50-70% less floor space than conveyor sorters and up to 99.99% sorting accuracy. Published case studies include 162 robots sorting more than 5,000 parcels per hour for a European last-mile operator and 105 robots sorting 5,610 parcels per hour for an EMEA fashion marketplace.
