Rookie 2 is the delivery robot that works the corridors of NAVER's 1784 headquarters, and the interesting thing about it is how little of it is actually in the robot. NAVER LABS calls it a brainless robot: the navigation and intelligence run in NAVER Cloud and reach the machine over 5G, so the hardware stays cheap and every robot in the fleet improves when the cloud does. The system that coordinates them is called ARC. What it does is ordinary and useful — carrying parcels, drinks and lunch boxes to desks. Staff order through NAVER WORKS or NAVER Order, and the robot reports progress and accepts changes through the same apps. The building is part of the robot. 1784 was designed around these machines, with ROBOPORT, a dedicated robot lift, and door and lift systems the fleet can call, so Rookie moves floor to floor without help. NAVER LABS has since taken the same arrangement abroad, to Tokyo Midtown Yaesu. Much of the design effort went into how it behaves around people. NAVER LABS researches human-robot interaction and gave Rookie gaze cues that show where it intends to go, and a navigation style it describes as human-friendly and non-threatening rather than merely collision-free.
