Jianghuai String S1

The String S1 is a cable-driven robot, and that single choice explains most of its specification. Its 7-degree-of-freedom arms are driven by tendon-like cables rather than motors mounted at the joints, which moves the mass off the limb: the movable part of each arm weighs just 3.5 kg. Light limbs are safer limbs, and they are also faster — the S1 accelerates at 8 m/s² and reaches 10 m/s at the end effector while remaining, in the laboratory's words, intrinsically safe for physical human contact. Cable drive gives it the compliance of rope with the stiffness of a mechanism, so it can work to millimetre precision and still yield when it touches a person. It carries 46 degrees of freedom in total, spans 240 cm, lifts 5 kg, repeats to ±0.5 mm and runs for ten hours — by far the longest endurance among the laboratory's robots. Its self-developed visuo-tactile dexterous hand can distinguish fabric textures, and a large model gives it enough scene understanding to anticipate what a user will need and plan a service route rather than wait for instructions. Jianghuai targets homes, hotels and elderly care alongside industrial work.
