Shihe Wind Turbine Tower Weld Inspection Robot

This is Shihe's non-destructive inspection robot for wind turbine towers, and it exists because the alternative is a person on a rope. In-service towers develop fatigue cracks at the welded joints where stress concentrates, and inspecting those joints by hand is both dangerous at height and unreliable through a coating. The robot climbs the tower and inspects the weld without surface preparation, using a magnetic flux leakage and magnetic disturbance module that reads through the paint. An RTK-based GNSS system gives centimetre-level positioning, and a weld-tracking algorithm keeps it travelling along the seam rather than across it. One button starts an autonomous run. It measures 730 x 380 x 360 mm, weighs under 45 kg and moves at up to 15 m/min on 0.5 kW at 48 V DC, rated IP65. It adapts to curved surfaces of 1 m radius, crosses 15 mm obstacles, and inspects at better than 8 m/min. Shihe describes it as the industry's first robot able to turn omnidirectionally on a curved vertical surface.
