R2-AURA - the Autonomous Universal Robotic Adhesion System - is the primary workhorse of R2 Robotics' R2Marine line, a subsea robot that cleans ship hulls while the vessel stays in service. Biofouling raises fuel consumption by an estimated 35-40%, and the conventional answers are both expensive: dry-docking halts revenue for weeks, while commercial divers deliver inconsistent results and carry safety risk. R2-AURA works during port calls or at anchor instead, so cleaning stops costing downtime. What distinguishes it from magnetic crawlers is how it holds on. High-speed rotation generates localised negative pressure that couples the robot to the hull, which means it grips steel, aluminium and composite alike with no magnetic interference, and follows complex curvature down to a one-metre minimum radius. Cleaning is done by cavitation jet: localised pressure drops form bubbles whose collapse produces shockwaves many times the initial pressure, stripping growth without cutting into the protective coating underneath. AI-driven path planning covers the hull with no blind spots, and the robot holds five degrees of freedom of attitude control to stay oriented in surge.
