The MyoPro is Myomo's myoelectric powered arm and hand orthosis - a brace that helps people move arms and hands paralysed or weakened by stroke, brachial plexus injury, brain or spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy or other neuromuscular conditions. Originally developed at MIT with Harvard Medical School, it reads the faint myoelectric nerve signals on the surface of the skin, with no implants and no electrical stimulation, and drives small motors to move the limb as the user intends. The user stays fully in control of their own hand, wrist, elbow and arm while the brace amplifies weak muscle signals - Myomo calls it power steering for your arm. Each MyoPro is custom fabricated: an orthotist fits and adjusts the carbon-fibre frame and padding to the user's arm, and the current MyoPro 2X typically weighs 3 to 4 lb depending on components, supported by a shoulder harness. Its sensors detect the intent to reach and motors assist elbow extension and hand opening and closing, enabling reach-to-grasp tasks such as picking up a bottle or phone and two-handed daily activities; it does not assist the shoulder. Users build up wear time from short 30 to 45 minute sessions toward all-day use, and it cannot be submerged. It is intended for adolescents (12+) and adults with neuromuscular conditions, fitted through a network of orthotics and prosthetics practices after an evaluation of muscle strength, range of motion and EMG signal strength, with occupational or physical therapy training required. Beyond restoring function for daily activities such as feeding and dressing, it can support rehabilitation, muscle re-education and increased range of motion; Myomo says it is the only wearable myoelectric device on the market to help restore function for people who still have their arms and hands but cannot use them.
