Haikan-kun Type I is a self-propelled pipe survey robot for building and plant pipes of 100 to 150 mm, developed from the AIRo articulated wheeled robot of Ritsumeikan University. Its linked segments move like a caterpillar and change posture to suit the pipe diameter, so it passes reducers, elbows, tees and flanges and can climb vertical pipes that ordinary pipe cameras cannot reach. An operator drives it remotely with a controller while cameras record the inside of the pipe, and gyro sensors log its route to map pipes in buildings without drawings. KOEI Dream Works says surveys can reach up to about 100 m depending on the pipe, and that video and maps are kept in the cloud. 3D route mapping is in development.
