The Ava 5G Receptionist Robot is the concierge robot Ava Robotics built after winning one of five start-up places in the MassTLC 5G Robotics Challenge, sponsored by Verizon and Ericsson - the first challenge of its kind, giving the winning teams access to 5G resources and coaching to explore what the network makes possible in robotics. Ava met the brief by combining its existing Mobile Base with a new payload designed for guest interaction, which the company credits for a robust result with fast development time. The five teams demonstrated their work at Verizon's 5G Lab in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The point of the exercise was latency: 5G's reduced latency and higher throughput let a robot lean on cloud compute without being limited by distance to it.
