The SSI SCHAEFER WEASEL Classic is a compact automated guided vehicle for moving small load carriers - bins, cartons, trays and hanging goods weighing up to 35 kg - through warehouses and production areas, and the company pitches it as an easy first step into logistics automation. Instead of costly sensor infrastructure it follows an optical track glued or applied to the floor, making turning decisions at RFID tags. Because every route and turn is predefined, its movements are fully predictable, which suits work around people. It travels at up to 1 m/s, transfers loads at transfer stations while moving, and works at 2 to 50 C. Transfers can be manual or automatic via storage-and-retrieval conveyors and space-saving 90-degree conveyors, and it can interface with conveying systems, fire doors and high-speed gates; a WEASEL lift serves other floors and platforms. A fleet controller on Wi-Fi optimises the system, supports troubleshooting and analysis and can link to MES, WMS or ERP; orders come from push buttons, the WEASEL terminal or tablet, PLC-driven machines or the material-flow system. Maintenance-free battery packs charge automatically (for example in three-shift operation) or are swapped manually, and one charge lasts up to 12 hours depending on load.
