LokomatPro Motivation is a configuration of Hocoma's Lokomat, the most widely studied robot-assisted gait trainer - Hocoma cites more than 70 clinical studies in peer-reviewed journals, 39 of them randomised controlled trials. The problem it addresses is straightforward: conventional gait therapy for a severely impaired patient takes two or three physical therapists to support the body weight and move the legs, which limits how many repetitions anyone can practise in a session. The Lokomat replaces that manual effort with an individually adjustable exoskeleton over a treadmill, combined with dynamic body weight support, so the patient gets intensive, task-specific repetition instead of a handful of assisted steps. Hip and knee joint angles are adjustable during training, as are treadmill speed, the amount of body weight supported and how strongly the robot assists. Hocoma emphasises natural weight bearing, afferent sensory feedback and physiological vertical displacement across the complete gait cycle - the intent being that the patient's nervous system receives the sensory pattern of real walking, not just passive limb movement. The Motivation configuration is built around Augmented Performance Feedback: game-like virtual-reality exercises that give the patient a reason to keep driving the movement themselves, which matters over the long courses of repetition this therapy depends on.
