BESCHREIBUNG
The Eagle X is a radio-controlled ornithopter: an aircraft that flies by flapping its wings rather than spinning a propeller. It is flown by hand from a handheld controller, within sight and within about 100 m, and it has no autonomy — there is no navigation, no route following and no autonomous flight mode. What it offers instead is the flight itself, alternating powered flapping with gliding the way a bird does. It spans 1.6 m across the wings with a 1 m fuselage and weighs about 790 g ready to fly, up to a 950 g maximum. The airframe uses carbon-fibre composite, reinforced nylon, PCCF, PPA-CF, TPU, aluminium alloy and steel, with a high-strength fibre-reinforced nylon wing fabric. A 850 mAh lithium battery at 15.2 V nominal gives roughly 15 minutes in the air, and ESD says the machine assembles and launches in about a minute. Two flight modes are offered: a stabilised mode with assisted control, and a stunt mode for loops, S-turns, falling-leaf descents and quick direction changes. The structure is built to survive hard landings, with wings, tail and outer parts replaceable in minutes. Because there is no propeller, it is markedly quieter than a rotor drone, which is the basis of ESD's wildlife-friendly claim. ESD pitches it at RC hobbyists, STEM teaching and research, and treats it as a platform: users can add sensors, tune the flight response and carry light payloads such as a DJI O4 or Insta360 X5 camera. It is not yet shipping — the maker's page takes a $10 reservation deposit and says a Kickstarter pre-order is coming.
FUNKTIONEN
- Flapping-wing flight: flaps and glides like a bird instead of using a propeller
- Radio-controlled by hand — no autonomy, no navigation, no autonomous flight mode
- Wingspan 1.6 m (63 in), fuselage length 1 m (39.37 in)
- Standard take-off weight about 790 g (1.74 lb), maximum 950 g (2.09 lb)
- 850 mAh lithium battery, 15.2 V nominal / 17.4 V fully charged, removable
- About 15 minutes of flight per battery
- Control range within 100 m (328 ft) and direct visual range
- Two flight modes: stabilised flight with assisted control, and stunt flight
- Aerobatics: forward and backward loops, S-turns, falling-leaf descents, rapid direction changes
- Ready to fly in about 60 seconds
- Crash-buffering structure
- wings, tail and outer parts replaceable in minutes
- Quieter than a rotor aircraft — low-frequency flapping instead of propeller noise
- Open to modification: add sensors and tune flight response
- Carries light payloads such as a DJI O4 or Insta360 X5 camera
- Airframe of carbon-fibre composite, reinforced nylon, PCCF, PPA-CF, TPU, aluminium alloy, stainless and alloy steel, with fibre-reinforced nylon wing fabric
