The BetaTANK Crude Oil Sludge Cleaning Robot is a tracked, hydraulically powered robot that enters crude oil and petroleum storage tanks to remove sludge while the operator stays outside. It is certified to IECEx Zone 0, the strictest explosion-safety class, because it uses no electrics inside the tank apart from a Zone 0 certified camera. The robot is deliberately low and heavy: its 370 mm profile lets it pass under the steam heating coils found in most tanks, and its 350 kg operating weight lets it sink through sludge to the tank floor for traction. At the front it picks up, breaks and crushes the sludge and feeds it into a pump mounted on the robot. The pump pushes the sludge out at 5 to 10 bar, which the maker contrasts with vacuum-truck suction systems limited to about 1 bar, and calls this a second-generation design. An umbilical carrying the hydraulic hoses, the sludge discharge hose and the camera cable gives a reach of 60 to 80 m. The operator drives the robot from a control panel in the safe area while watching the camera feed. BetaTANK holds an Indian patent on the technology.
