Atlas is Boston Dynamics' all-electric humanoid robot, and the company's first step toward a commercial humanoid product. It replaces the hydraulic Atlas that spent a decade as a research platform demonstrating parkour and dance; that machine is now retired to the company's legacy collection. The electric Atlas is built for industrial work rather than demonstration. Boston Dynamics describes it as human-scale deliberately, so it can work the same workstations with the same equipment as staff: 1.9 m tall and 90 kg, with 56 degrees of freedom, tactile sensing and a 360-degree camera view. It handles 50 kg instantaneously and 30 kg sustained, and runs about four hours on self-swappable batteries so it can keep working rather than stopping to charge. The robot learns new tasks quickly, adapts to changing environments and works autonomously with minimal supervision. It has left the laboratory: Atlas is in its first customer pilot at a Hyundai facility, field-testing real sequencing work, and Boston Dynamics has launched a product version built for enterprise deployment using what it learned there.
